Meeting called to order at 5:02 pm

Kelli began the meeting, explaining the agenda for the evening, and then summarizing the officer positions and the student chapter requirements/suggestions for activities.

Dr. Albertson gave a brief explanation of what ASIS&T (American Society for Information Science and Technology) “is” to set the stage for the rest of the meeting.

Susan detailed the history of the UA student chapter, which was revived Spring semester 2011.

Dr. Albertson then gave a more detailed description about ASIS&T, and why it’s beneficial to belong: ASIS&T represents the “cutting edge” of Information Technology. Joining the professional society is recommended for all chapter members and is required for Student Chapter Officers. Dr. Albertson reminded all that a strong student chapter requires not only a good set of events, but also requires good attendance of those events by chapter members. Active and engaged members and ongoing recruitment is very important to maintain a good student chapter.

Kelli detailed the benefits of joining the professional society (access to digital library, Joblist, and reduced rates for webinars & events. http://www.asis.org/studentmember.html)

There are three scheduled events for this fall:

  • Advanced HTML/CSS workshop (Dr. Bonnici)
  • Project Alfa information session (Dr. Bonnici)
  • Digital libraries topic (Jason Battles, Head of Web Services at the University of Alabama Libraries)

Elections were held (via Surveymonkey) to fill the following vacant positions: Secretary, President, Vice-President, Webmaster.

Election results:
Secretary – Ashley Crace
President – Greg Carr
Vice-President – Elizabeth Levkoff
Webmaster – Audrey Taylor
Treasurer – William Landau (William was elected in May)

Susan will be sending out a survey for meeting times for Dr. Bonnici’s presentations and to decide on the topic to be presented by Jason Battles. Survey link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GFY3N7W

Kelli reminded people to think of technology topics that they’d like to see turned into events for discussion at the next meeting.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, and I hope new people know they’re welcome to join the Student Chapter at any time. Contact Greg Carr or Elizabeth Levkoff for an application – contact information is on the Student Chapter website.

ASIST Student Chapter Survey

Welcome back current ASIST members & a big, warm welcome to new ASIST members!

It’s time for Fall semester to begin, meaning that it’s also time to get our ASIST Student Chapter ready to go.

The first thing that needs to be done is to establish a meeting time for the ASIST webinar meetings for the coming semester. Last spring the hour before classes (5-6 CT) worked out well for both DE & on-campus students to hold meetings. Please click on the following link to complete the survey by Thursday September 8, 2011: ASIST Meeting Times & Topics Survey

Also included in the survey:

  • a space for those who would like to nominate themselves for Officer positions: we currently need to fill the Secretary, Chair, and Webmaster spots
  • a space for listing technology topics of interest to you…what topic can we focus on for an event that will help enhance your professional development? While we are already seeking presenters to cover a variety of topics including cloud computing, advanced CSS/HTML, and SLIS’ new Project Alfa program, we really want to offer a valuable series of webinars and hands-on workshops this fall…if you’re really itching to learn something specific, please let us know and we’ll do our best to get experts come and talk!

Hopefully we’ll be able to archive the meetings/events, so that even if you can’t make it to one, you can still hear what occurred and benefit from it.

And once again, WELCOME to the UA Student Chapter of ASIST — I think we’re going to have an awesome autumn!
